Tim Southee announced his retirement from test cricket in 2024.
On December 17, 2024, veteran New Zealand seamer Tim Southee brought an end to his remarkable test career, which spanned 16 years.
Making his test debut against England at Napier in 2008, Southee quickly established himself as one of the most effective pacers in the world. His partnership with Trent Boult is considered among the most potent bowling duos of all time.
His 7/64 against India in Bangalore in 2012 remains his best innings bowling figures in whites. Later in the same year, he claimed 11 wickets against the West Indies at an average of 21.09, helping the Kiwis secure their first away series win in the Caribbean.
Southee’s contribution on the cricket field extends beyond just his bowling skills— the speedster made history by hitting his 50th six in only his 36th test match. He smashed 98 sixes in his test career, the joint fourth-most in test cricket.
He also played a crucial role in New Zealand’s run to the ICC WTC 201-21 title.
He was appointed as New Zealand’s test captain in 2022, following Kane Williamson’s resignation from the role.
Playing his farewell test against England at Hamilton, Southee played a cameo with a quickfire 23 in the first innings. He followed up his batting brilliance with a couple of wickets in the second innings to help New Zealand to a massive 423-run victory.
