Rohit Sharma led India to ICC T20 World Cup 2024 as well as ICC Champions Trophy 2025 win.
Shubman Gill’s sojourn as India’s ODI captain has not been a good one so far. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had controversially sacked Rohit Sharma as the India ODI captain despite him winning the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in March last year.
This came after Rohit Sharma, along with Virat Kohli, announced his Test retirement in May 2025. Having already been retired from the T20I format since the T20 World Cup 2024 win, Rohit played only one format for India—ODIs.
But the BCCI was not in favor of split captaincy, and when Gill was named the Test captain before the England tour, he was also named the ODI captain as well.
Gill has not fared well in his ODI captaincy stint, as he lost his maiden outing in Australia 1-2, where Rohit won the Player of the Series. Gill missed the ODI series against South Africa due to an injury, which India won under KL Rahul.
Gill returned as India captain for the New Zealand ODI series, but India lost that series 1-2 as well, with the Black Caps registering their maiden ODI series win in India.
“He is a lot better captain than Shubman Gill” – Manoj Tiwary asks BCCI to name Rohit Sharma India’s captain for the 2027 World Cup

Manoj Tiwary, a former Indian cricket player, thinks Rohit should be reappointed by the BCCI and Gill should be fired as the ODI captain. The BCCI should “course correct” and begin getting ready for the 2027 World Cup, according to Tiwary.
“Yes, absolutely. That’s what I’m suggesting because there’s still time to course correct. It’s about the World Cup. It’s not just about a bilateral series or a random tournament we are going to play,” Tiwary said in an interaction with InsideSport.
Tiwary went on to say that things probably would have been different if Rohit had been captain during the series against New Zealand.
He continued by saying that Rohit is “a lot better” than Gill and that he thinks Rohit’s leadership will increase India’s chances of winning the World Cup.
“What was the need to remove Rohit Sharma from the captaincy? I’m pretty sure that if Rohit were leading even today in the ODIs, it would have been a different result (New Zealand series) altogether. Because when he won the Champions Trophy, I think the team was going forward in the right direction,” he said.
Tiwary also called Rohit a better captain than Gill and stated that India’s chances of winning the 2027 World Cup go exponentially high with Rohit at the helm.
“Rohit is not a little better than Shubman, but a lot better, currently. That’s why he’s such a successful captain. You can win it (the World Cup) with Shubman’s captaincy, but I’m suggesting comparing the captaincy of both. If Rohit becomes the captain, what is the percentage chance of winning? And if Shubman leads, what is the percentage chance of winning? I think everyone will say that if Rohit is the captain, then there is an 85 to 90 percent chance of winning the World Cup,” added Tiwary.
When did Shubman Gill replace Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain?
Shubman Gill was named India’s ODI captain, replacing Rohit Sharma, after the veteran retired from Tests last year, as the BCCI wanted to avoid split captaincy.
What is Rohit Sharma’s record as India’s ODI captain?
Rohit Sharma captained India in 56 ODIs from 2017-2025, winning 42 games, losing 12, with one no result. He led India to the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 win, and in the final of the 2023 ICC World Cup.
How has Shubman Gill fared as India’s ODI captain?
Shubman Gill’s record has been poor, with India winning only two ODIs from the six games he has captained. India lost 1-2 to Australia in the ODI series down under and 1-2 to New Zealand at home recently.
