This is Tony de Zorzi’s maiden contract in South Africa’s franchise-based T20 league SA20.

South Africa opener Tony de Zorzi, who had an impressive outing in the ODIs against India recently, has received an SA20 contract. Durban Super Giants (DSG) have signed the left-handed opener for the upcoming Betway SA20 starting in under two weeks.

De Zorzi recently made quite an impression in the recently finished series, which he played against India, the world’s top-ranked ODI team. The left-handed opener slammed a brilliant century, his first one in ODIs during the series. He will replace seamer Kyle Abbott in DSG for SA20 2024, who has been ruled out of the competition due to injury.

De Zorzi has a fantastic domestic record, having scored over 3000 runs in both First-Class and List-A cricket. He has also scored a T20 century in addition to a First-Class triple century, demonstrating his all-round talent with the bat.

De Zorzi will bolster the DSG middle order, which will contain Heinrich Klaasen and West Indies star Nicholas Pooran. Tony will aim to learn from his Proteas teammates and veterans Keshav Maharaj and Quinton de Kock as he prepares to make his SA20 debut.

However, this means De Zorzi, who was supposedly penciled in as the opener by coach Shukri Conrad for South Africa’s Test tour of New Zealand, will now play in the SA20. South Africa named a second-string team with 7 uncapped players in the squad, to be captained by uncapped Neil Brand.

De Zorzi will be in line for his DSG debut when they host MI Cape Town in their SA20 opener at Kingsmead Stadium on 11 January.

Durban Super Giants Squad:

Keshav Maharaj (captain), Quinton de Kock, Reece Topley, Heinrich Klaasen, Dwaine Pretorius, Kyle Mayers, Matthew Breetzke, Prenelan Subrayen, Bryce Parsons (Rookie), Jason Smith, Nicholas Pooran (Wild Card), Bhanuka Rajapaksa, Noor Ahmad, Jon-Jon Smuts, Wiaan Mulder, Keemo Paul, Naveen Ul-Haq and Junior Dala.
