Ranking top 10 T20 leagues around the world

The first professional T20 league was introduced in 2003 by the ECB.
T20 cricket has changed the global landscape of this sport. The shortest format of the game has expedited the commercialization of the game across the world.
The advent of various T20 leagues in dozens of countries pushed the ICC to hand a T20 international status to all cricket boards in the world.
The T20 leagues have been cropping up regularly in different parts of the globe, leading to a massive financial boom in the market. Several high-profile players have denied taking a central contract with the national board in order to play a freelancer in T20 leagues.
Let us see the top 10 T20 leagues in the world:
10. Super Smash
New Zealand’s premier T20 competition, Super Smash, began in 2006. With not a lot of financial incentives, the big overseas players don’t flock to the Super Smash and the tournament is dominated by local cricketers only. Auckland Aces are the most successful team with five titles.
9. Lanka Premier League (LPL)
The Lanka Premier League (LPL) made its debut in 2020. The LPL has faced several challenges, including the banning of teams. Several retired players from other countries take part in the LPL regularly. Jaffna Kings are the most successful team with four LPL titles to their name in five seasons.
8. Bangladesh Premier League (BPL)
The BPL manages to attract overseas players who are not part of other bigger franchise leagues. Players like Kyle Mayers and Shoaib Malik have glittered the BPL. The inaugural edition of the BPL was played in 2012. Comilla Victorians are the most successful team in the BPL with four trophies.
7. Caribbean Premier League (CPL)
The CPL is one of the most renowned T20 leagues in the world. In recent years, it has managed to attract some big overseas names as the involvement of Indian owners have increased who have provided hefty financial rewards.
The maiden CPL season was played in 2013. Trinbago Knight Riders are the most successful CPL team, having clinched four titles.
6. International League T20 (ILT20)
The ILT20 is the biggest T20 league of the UAE. It was launched in 2023. The majority of the franchises in the ILT20 are owned by owners of the Indian Premier League, and thus, there is a huge star power of international cricketers in the ILT20.
Gulf Giants and MI Emirates have won one title each so far.
5. T20 Blast
The T20 Blast is the first major T20 league in the world that was launched by the ECB in 2003 and it’s still running. But it’s value has decreased with the introduction of another league in England and it also coincides with some of England’s international matches. Leicestershire and Hampshire have won the T20 Blast the most times, doing so thrice each.
4. The Hundred
The Hundred is ECB’s idea of making a unique franchise cricket league: instead of regular 20-over-per-innings matches, the Hundred has games of 100-balls-per-innings. It has been a huge hit in England, but not so in other parts of the world. The ECB has now accepted selling a part of the franchise to owners.
Out of four seasons so far of the men’s Hundred, Oval Invincibles have won two.
3. Big Bash League (BBL)
The BBL is Australia’s marquee T20 tournament. While the Australian test players regularly miss this tournament, others do ply their trade. There are plenty of players from around the world taking part in the BBL, and this competition often sees sizeable crowds.
The first BBL season was played in 2011/12. Perth Scorchers have won five BBL titles, the most by any team.
2. SA20
After a few failed attempts with different leagues, the Cricket South Africa (CSA) board finally got it right with a T20 league with the launch of the SA20 in 2023. All six franchises in the SA20 are sold to owners of the Indian Premier League. Fans have loved the vibes of the SA20, and the tournament has been highly competitive because of the participation of a spate of top T20 players in the world.
Sunrisers Eastern Cape have won both SA20 tournaments so far.
1. Indian Premier League (IPL)
The IPL is unarguably the biggest T20 league in the world. Started in 2008, the IPL become so massive that it’s competing with other sporting leagues like the NFL and EPL in terms of money offered by the broadcasters per game.
Chennai Super Kings and Mumbai Indians are the joint-most successful IPL teams, having won five titles each so far.
