Top 5 batsmen with most runs in test cricket in 2023
Here we take a look at top five batsmen who have scored most runs in test cricket in the year 2023.
The ongoing calendar year witnessed multiple big events in tests including the big Border-Gavaskar Trophy earlier this year in February-March, then the ICC World Test Championship final between India and Australia at The Oval in June. One month later, Australia and England fought hard for their oldest rivalry Ashes, which Australia retained after the five-match series which ended with a score line of 2-2.
Test cricket has witnessed several good performances in the ongoing calendar year. The battle between bat and ball was magnificent this year as only one batsman has managed to score over 1000 runs in the format this year. Let’s have a look at the batters with the most runs in test cricket this year.
5. Marnus Labuschagne (Australia) – 736 runs
Australian middle-order batter Marnus Labuschagne has become one of the most vital players in the Australian setup after one more decent season with the bat. Labuschagne is the 5th leading run-scorer in test cricket this year with 736 runs in 23 innings. He smashed his only century of 2023 against England in the 4th Ashes test played at Old Trafford.
4. Joe Root (England) – 787 runs
Former English skipper Joe Root is also among the leading run-scorers this year despite playing very few test matches. Joe Root has played only 8 test matches for England in 2023 and has scored 787 runs at an outstanding average of 65.58. Root smashed two centuries this year, one against New Zealand in Wellington and one against Australia at Edgbaston.
3. Steve Smith (Australia) – 853 runs
It is extremely tough to stop Steve Smith from scoring runs in red-ball format. Australia’s run-machine never looks out of touch whenever he wears baggy green and comes out to bat for Kangaroos in test cricket. Steve Smith will finish one more season among the runs as he scored 853 runs in 12 test matches at an average of 42.65. Smith smacked 3 centuries this year.
2. Travis Head (Australia) – 902 runs
Australian left-hander middle-order batter Travis Head had a golden run in 2023. Travis Head played two crucial knocks to win Australia two ICC titles in the same year in two different formats. Head’s 163 against India in the WTC finals will not fade away from memories soon. Travis Head scored 902 runs in 11 test matches he played for Australia in the 2023 calendar year.
1. Usman Khawaja (Australia) – 1168 runs:
Australian opener Usman Khawaja is the only batsman to complete 1000 calendar runs in tests in 2023. Usman Khawaja remained consistent throughout the year and scored 1168 runs in 12 test matches he played in 2023. Usman Khawaja’s average stands at 55.61 and he has smashed 3 centuries and 6 half-centuries in 22 innings he batted in 2023. Khawaja is the leading run-scorer in test cricket in 2023.
