Here’s a look at the top 5 bowlers with most five-wicket hauls in the history of ICC Cricket World Cup.

The ICC Cricket World Cup is one of the biggest stages to perform for any team or player. Over the years, some incredible individual performances have been registered, but a bowler taking a fifer is very rare. In this batting-dominant game, it is very tough for a bowler to take five wickets in an innings.

But there are some champion bowlers who have done it consistently on the biggest stage. In this article, we will talk about the list of bowlers with the most five-wicket hauls in ICC Cricket World Cup history. This list includes some big superstars in the bowling departments.

Here are the top five bowlers with most fifers in ICC Cricket World Cup history

5. Ashantha de Mel – 2:

Former Sri Lankan pacer Ashantha de Mel bowled the first ball for Sri Lanka in test cricket. He registered two fifers in just a span of three days during the ICC Cricket World Cup 1983. He picked up 5/39 against Pakistan and 5/32 against New Zealand as his two best World Cup figures.

Former Caribbean pacer Vasbert Drakes is another bowler with two World Cup fifers. He represented his country in the 2003 edition and took two five-wicket hauls in six innings. He overall picked up a total of 16 wickets in that competition, with a best of 5/33. He took 5/44 against Canada and 5/33 against Kenya in that tournament.

3. Gary Gilmour – 2:

Gary Gilmour was a fierce Australian pacer who was only the second bowler to register a World Cup fifer. In fact, he was the first bowler to take multiple five-wicket hauls in the ICC Cricket World Cup. He played in the inaugural edition in 1975 for his country. He played only two matches and took 11 wickets in those. Gilmour took 6/14 against England and followed it up with 5/48 against West Indies.

2. Mitchell Starc – 3:

Mitchell Starc was the prime reason that Australia won the ICC Cricket World Cup 2015 at home. He took 22 wickets in Australia’s World Cup-winning campaign in 2015. In 2019, He broke the record of Glenn McGrath for most wickets in a single World Cup edition, and his numbers are just exceptional.

In 2019 World Cup, Mitchell Starc took 27 wickets, which is most for a bowler in a single edition of the tournament. The record was previously held by his fellow countryman Glenn McGrath, who scalped 26 wickets in 2007. Starc has played three editions and taken the third-most wickets overall. He has 59 wickets in 26 innings with three fifers and a best of 6/28. Starc also has three four-wicket hauls.

Mohammed Shami is at the top of the list. The Indian pacer has been phenomenal when it comes to performing in the ICC Cricket World Cup. He is the only Indian to take 50 World Cup wickets and the fastest overall. He completed 50 wickets in just 17 innings, which is just incredible. Shami has four five-wicket hauls with 54 wickets in 17 innings. His best of 7/57 came against New Zealand in the semi-final of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
