New Zealand and Australia jointly hold the record of highest powerplay score in ODI cricket.

ODI cricket is a mix of Test and T20I, and it has some elements of the other two formats in it. But it is also true that since T20 cricket came into existence, teams have started scoring big and quick runs in 50-over cricket as well. Powerplay in ODI cricket is the first attempt for any batting side to score because there are only two fielders allowed in the first ten overs.

That is when teams tend to score as many runs as possible to get a good start. Scoring 80-85 runs is pretty good in the first ten overs in ODI cricket. But there have been some instances when teams have also crossed more than 110 runs in the first ten overs, which we will check here. In this article, we will talk about the top five highest scores achieved in powerplay in ODI cricket.

Here is the list of top five Powerplay scores in ODI cricket:

5. Australia - 112 (10 overs) vs India, Vishakapatnam, 2023:

Australia registered the fifth highest powerplay score in ODI cricket, which came against India in Visakhapatnam in March 2023. It was the second ODI, and India got all out for just 117 runs in 26 overs. In reply, the Australian openers scored 112 runs in the first ten overs and made 121/0 in the 11 overs to win by ten wickets and 234 balls to spare. Travis Head made 51 off 30, and Mitchell Marsh scored 66 off 36.

4. West Indies - 114 (10 overs) vs India, Port of Spain, 2019:

West Indies registered their highest score in the first ten overs against India in August 2019 at Port of Spain. It was a 35-over game due to rain and batting first, West Indies scored 240/7 in the first innings. Both openers added 114 runs in the first ten overs. Chris Gayle made a 41-ball 73, and Evin Lewis scored 43 off 29. But India made 256/4 in 32.3 overs and won the game courtesy a Virat Kohli century.

3. New Zealand - 116 (10 overs) vs England, Wellington, 2015:

New Zealand hold the third-highest powerplay score, which came against England during the 2015 World Cup in Wellington. England were bowled out for 123 runs in the first innings, courtesy a 7-fer from Tim Southee. In reply, skipper Brendon McCullum smashed an 18-ball 50. New Zealand scored 116/2 in the first ten overs. McCullum remained unbeaten on 77 off 25, with 8 fours and 7 sixes, and New Zealand made 125/2 in just 12.3 overs to win the game.

Australia recorded the joint-highest powerplay score in ODI cricket. They did it against New Zealand in the 27th game of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 at Dharamsala. David Warner and Travis Head added 118 runs without losing a wicket in the first ten overs; they reached 50 in just 4.1 overs and kept on smashing the Kiwi bowlers to all parts. Warner made a 27-ball fifty, while Head scored a 25-ball half-century.

1. New Zealand - 118 (8.2 overs) vs Sri Lanka, Christchurch, 2015:

When Martin Guptill gets going, he is just unstoppable. That's what Sri Lanka faced at Christchurch in December 2015. Sri Lanka got all out for just 117 runs in the first innings. In reply, New Zealand required just 8.2 overs to reach 118/0 and registered a massive win by ten wickets and 250 balls to spare. Martin Guptill registered the highest individual score within the powerplay and made an unbeaten 93 off 30 balls, with nine fours and 8 sixes and Tom Latham made 17 off 20. New Zealand scored 118 in 8.2 overs, and if they had played 10 balls, we would have gotten more runs.
