PBKS defeated CSK by four wickets in 49th match of IPL 2025.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) lost their eighth match of Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 when they hosted Punjab Kings (PBKS) on Wednesday, April 30. The CSK vs PBKS clash took place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai. It was a must-win game for the Super Kings to keep their hopes alive for the playoffs. However, the MS Dhoni-led side lost the game by four wickets and are now out of the race for playoffs.
After being asked to bat first, CSK managed to put on 190 runs on the scoreboard. Sam Curran slammed a marvellous knock of 88 runs for the side. However, Yuzvendra Chahal picked four wickets, including a hat-trick. He restricted CSK from reaching a mammoth total on the board. Arshdeep Singh and Marco Jansen also picked two wickets.
During the chase, Shreyas Iyer and Prabhsimran Singh slammed stunning half-centuries to drive PBKS to victory. Iyer also won Player of the Match award for his match-winning knock of 72 runs. After the victory, PBKS have now jumped to second spot in the points table with 13 points. On the other hand, CSK languish at bottom of the points table.
CSK eliminated from playoffs race for the second consecutive time
Since CSK have lost eight games out of 10 and have only four points, the maximum they can reach is 12 points, which wouldn’t be enough to make it to the playoffs.
This is the fourth time the five-time champions are out of playoffs race and this is the first time they have been eliminated from the race in successive seasons. They were eliminated from the playoffs race in 2020, 2022, 2024 and now in 2025.
CSK fans were shocked to witness their team’s ouster from playoffs. They expressed disappointment on social media platform X (formerly Twitter).
Meanwhile, CSK will next take on Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) in match No. 52 of the season. The encounter will take place at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Saturday, May 3. RCB currently top the points table with 14 points.
