Matt Henry took a five-wicket haul in India’s first innings in the 1st IND vs NZ test.

On October 17, India registered their third-lowest total in test cricket and the lowest at home when they were knocked over for only 46 runs in the first innings of the 1st IND vs NZ test in Bengaluru.

After day 1 was completely washed out, the test match got underway at the scheduled time on day 2 with Rohit Sharma winning the toss and electing to bat first. Both teams had contrasting ideologies and thoughts about the pitch as India went with three spinners and New Zealand with three pacers.

It didn’t take long to realise that the visitors had got their combination spot on under overcast skies and on a pitch that had moisture on it due to rain.

The ball swung and seamed considerably and also kicked off from the surface, making life utterly difficult for the Indian batters, who didn’t help themselves by playing adventurous shots – like Rohit Sharma, who stepped out and tried to hack Tim Southee but got his stumps rattle, or Sarfaraz Khan, who attempted an uppish drive off Matt Henry, or Ravindra Jadeja, who played an extravagant flick only to find a leading edge.

Of course, the Kiwi pace trio was immaculate in their lines and lengths as well, getting the outside edges of multiple Indian batters, while the fielders’ catching was outstanding: Devon Conway and substitute Michael Bracewell took one-handed stunners and Henry grabbed a diving take in the deep.

All this resulted in India succumbing to a low total of 46 runs, which eked out frustrations from the fans on Twitter.
