Sri Lankan opening batter Pathum Nissanka has created history with his blistering knock against Afghanistan in the first ODI in Pallekele. Right-hand batter Pathum Nissanka has become the first Sri Lankan batter to score a double century in ODI cricket. Nissanka became the 11th batter in the world to score a double century in ODI cricket. Sanath Jayasuriya was present at the ground to witness the youngster going past his record of highest individual score by a Sri Lankan batsman in ODIs. Jayasuriya previously held the record of highest individual score by a Sri Lankan in ODIS – 189.

Twitter celebrated the sensational knock in style. Pathum Nissanka scored an unbeaten 210 runs in 139 balls with 20 fours and 8 sixes. Nissanka crossed Jayasuriya’s old record of 189 runs as the highest individual score for Sri Lanka in an ODI.

Here’s how twitter reacted to Pathum Nissanka’s ODI double century:

Sanath Jayasuriya smashed 189 against India in 2000. Pathum Nissanka finished the Sri Lankan innings with two consecutive boundaries and smashed one six and one four. Sri Lanka scored 381 runs at the loss of three wickets in 50 overs. Apart from Nissanka, Avishka Fernando (88) and Sadeera Samarwickrama (44) also contributed to huge Sri Lankan total in the first ODI against Afghanistan.

Pathum Nissanka has also overtaken the likes of Sachin Tendulkar, Glenn Maxwell, and Shubman Gill in the list of highest individual scores in an ODI innings. Pathum Nissanka is joint fifth with Fakhar Zaman and Ishan Kishan. Afghanistan are playing without their star leg-spinner Rashid Khan.
