Ruturaj Gaikwad will be leading Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024.

Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made a major announcement on Thursday, March 21, just a day ahead of beginning of the IPL 2024. The franchise handed over captaincy reins to Ruturaj Gaikwad replacing the legendary captain MS Dhoni. Dhoni will probably be playing his last IPL season as a player and is expected to announce his retirement from the professional cricket career at the end of the 17th season of the IPL.

Ruturaj Gaikwad will be second experiment from CSK camp. Earlier CSK promoted Ravindra Jadeja as captain of the side in ahead of the IPL 2022. Gaikwad has so far played 52 T20 matches for CSK in the IPL. Gaikwad made his IPL debut in 2020 against Rajasthan Royals at Sharjah Cricket Stadium. Gaikwad has been a phenomenal opening batter for the side since then.

CSK fans are happy with the announcement as they were expecting this call during the upcoming season. CSK officially released an statement on twitter and said that the team is looking forward for the upcoming season under Ruturaj Gaikwadā€™s leadership. Gaikwadā€™s elevation has somewhat confirmed Dhoniā€™s decision of saying goodbye to the game after IPL 2024.

Hereā€™s how twitter reacted to MS Dhoni handing over CSK captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad:

Chennai Super Kings released an official statement, ā€œMS Dhoni has handed over Chennai Super Kingsā€™ captaincy to Ruturaj Gaikwad ahead of the start of TATA IPL 2024. Ruturaj has been an integral part of Chennai Super Kings since 2019 and has played 52 matches in IPL during this period. The team looks forward to the upcoming season.ā€

Last year, Ruturaj Gaikwad captained India to Gold Medal at the Asian Games 2022 in China. Gaikwad has also led Maharashtra and India A side in limited-overs cricket. Gaikwad also vice-captained Indian T20I side in the five-match T20I series against Australia when Suryakumar Yadav was leading the team. CSK will kick-off their IPL 2024 campaign against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on March 22, where Gaikwad will be making his IPL captaincy debut.
