Twitter reacts as Sri Lanka bowl out England for a modest total of 156 in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 match in Bengaluru
Sri Lanka need 157 runs to win against England in match No. 25 of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023.
England have failed to pull themselves together once again and have done miserably in the first innings against Sri Lanka at M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bangalore. England got bundled out for just 156 against Sri Lanka in 33.1 overs in the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 league round encounter. England have registered the lowest-ever ODI total at the M. Chinnaswamy stadium, as well as their lowest total against Sri Lanka in a World Cup game. Sri Lanka have bounced back nicely in the World Cup with a spirited performance.
Sri Lankan bowlers were right on target against the top-class England batting line-up that succumbed once again in the mega event in India. Fans were stunned to witness a below-average performance from the defending champions. England had a dismal day against Sri Lankan pacers, who gave them no time to recover. Coming back after a long gap in ODI cricket, all-rounder Angelo Mathews had a terrific day by bowling out Dawid Malan at the top and Moeen Ali in the lower-order.
Here's how twitter reacted to England's modest total of 156 runs:
Poor show from England batting
English captain Jos Buttler won the toss and elected to bat first in Bangalore. Considering the conditions and weather, it was a great decision. Bangalore offered a high-scoring encounter, but England’s high-risk game provided Sri Lanka with an opportunity in the game. England had a decent start, with Dawid Malan (28) and Jonny Bairstow (30) adding 45 runs for the first wicket. Sri Lankan captain introduced Lahiru Kumara a bit late in the bowling attack, and this change brought good luck to Lankans.
England's middle-order had an awful day, and no one could go on to add a partnership and try to stabilize their innings. All-rounder Ben Stokes was the top-scorer for the defending champions with 43 runs. A total of six English batters contributed only 19 runs. Ben Stokes and Moeen Ali had a bit of a partnership in the middle, but Sadeera Samarawickrama’s agility on the field provided Sri Lanka another break.
Adil Rashid’s run-out represented the entire English innings, which was clueless. England’s overly aggressive approach proved fatal for them at a crucial stage of a big tournament like the World Cup. Lahiru Kumara picked up 3/35 in 7 overs, Angelo Mathews got 2/14 in his 5 overs and Kasun Rajitha got 2/36 in his 7 overs. Maheesh Theekshana also picked up a wicket to wind up the proceedings in the first innings. Sri Lanka have a 100% record against England in the World Cup in last 23 years.
