The Delhi-born Virat Kohli made his India debut in 2008.

On Tuesday, November 5, 2024, former Indian cricket team captain Virat Kohli is celebrating his 36th birthday. The Indian superstar batsman was born on this day in 1988 in Delhi.

In 2008, Kohli captained the India under-19 team to victory in the Under-19 World Cup. Later in the same year, he got to make his ODI debut for India against Sri Lanka in Dambulla.

In 2010, having already cemented his place in the ODI side, Kohli made his T20I debut and a year later, he received his test cap.

Kohli never looked back and went on to rule the world cricket in the 2010s era, eventually bagging the ICC Male Cricketer of the Decade award in November 2020.

While he was prolific in the test format, Kohli simply stood out as a beast in the two white-ball formats. He is currently the third-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket, with 13906 runs at an average of 58.

During the ICC World Cup 2023, he broke Sachin Tendulkar’s record of 49 ODI centuries and currently sits at the top with 50 ODI tons. In the same tournament, Kohli also became the first batsman to amass over 700 runs in a World Cup tournament.

Virat Kohli is the only player to win the Man of the Tournament award twice in ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, in 2016 and 2022 editions. However, India didn’t win those tournaments.

Kohli bowed out of T20Is in style by helping India win the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 with a match-winning fifty in the final against South Africa. He is currently the second-leading T20I run-scorer, finishing his T20I career with 4188 runs at an average of 48 with one century and 38 fifties.

In tests, he’s currently suffering a dip but his record still remains solid. In 118 tests, Kohli has amassed 9040 runs at an average of 47 with 29 centuries and 31 fifties.

Overall, Virat Kohli is the fourth-highest international run-scorer with 27134 runs, scored at an average of 52. His 80 international centuries are the second-most, behind only Sachin Tendulkar’s tally of 100 tons.

Fans, experts, cricketers and ex-cricketers all wished Kohli on his 36th birthday.
