Tushar Deshpande & Tanush Kotian script history, become second No. 10 and 11 to hit hundreds in a First Class match

Tushar Deshpande and Tanush Kotian added 232 runs for tenth wicket against Baroda.

In a remarkable display of lower-order batting, Mumbai batters Tushar Deshpande and Tanush Kotian etched their names in the history books, becoming only the second pair of No. 10 and 11 batters to score centuries in a First-Class (FC) match.

Both the batters achieved this record-breaking feat during the Ranji Trophy 2023-24 quarterfinal against Baroda on Tuesday, February 27 at the Sharad Pawar Academy, BKC in Mumbai. After combining at 337/9, Mumbai batters Tushar Deshpande and Kotian made a mockery of the Baroda bowling attack as both batters smashed their respective centuries.

Kotian got to his landmark off 115 deliveries, while Deshpande got to his century in 112 balls. Both the Mumbai batters also made a record-breaking partnership of 232 runs in the quarter-final match against Baroda on Monday.

Mumbai batters Tushar Deshpande and Tanush Kotian became only the second pair of No. 10 and No. 11 batters to smash respective centuries in First-Class (FC) cricket history till now. The first time it happened was when Indian batters Shute Banarjee (121) and Chandu Sarwate (124*) scored respective tons in India vs Surrey match during India’s tour of England in 1946.

Tushar Deshpande and Tanush Kotian also became the first No. 10 and 11 batters to smash centuries in a Ranji Trophy match. Both Mumbai batters added 232 runs for the tenth wicket.

The Ranji Trophy record of highest tenth wicket partnership stands with former Delhi batters Ajay Sharma and Maninder Singh. Sharma and Singh achieved the feat with a 233-run partnership against Bombay in the 1991-92 Ranji semi-final at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai.

While former cricketers Chandu Sarwate and Shute Banarjee hold the overall Indian FC record with their 249-run stand which they achieved during India vs Surrey match in 1946.
