ICC U19 World Cup 2024: South Africa squad, schedule, timings, when and where to watch

South Africa name Juan James as the new captain of South Africa U19 for U19 World Cup 2024.

The 15th edition of the ICC U19 World Cup is scheduled to begin on January 19, 2024. South Africa secured the tournament’s hosting rights, replacing Sri Lanka, which were previously planned to host the tournament. This will be the third time South Africa are hosting the tournament.

The International Cricket Council (ICC) suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 due to political interference, allowing South Africa to host the U19 World Cup for the third time in the history.

The event will run 23 days and include 48 matches between 16 teams. India are the most successful team in tournament history, winning five U19 World Cups so far.

India will also compete as the defending champions and are favorites to win the upcoming major youth tournament. India won the U19 World Cup 2022 in West Indies by defeating England in the finals.

The 16 teams have been divided into four groups, with the top three from each group advancing to the super six round. The super six round will be divided into two groups, each consisting of six teams. The top-three teams from groups A and D will advance to group 1, while teams from groups B and C will move to group 2. The top-two teams from each super six group will compete in the semi-finals.

South Africa cricket faced controversy before the tournament even started. When South Africa announced the squad for the U19 World Cup 2024, David Teeger was named as the captain of the side.

However, just a few days before the tournament began, Teeger was relieved from captaincy post and Juan James was named the new skipper. This came after security advice regarding the position of the player in the Gaza-Israel conflict.

Cricket South Africa (CSA), the country’s cricket governing body, announced its decision Friday, stating that there could be the risk of “conflict or even violence, including between rival groups of protesters”.

South Africa are placed in group B along with last edition’s runners-up England, Scotland and West Indies.
