Veteran umpire Manik Gupta tragically passed away after a swarm of bees came from behind him and attacked him.

In a shocking turn of events, an experienced cricket referee named Manik Gupta died during a cricket match For the unknown, Manik had been an umpire for almost thirty years and officially worked with the Kanpur Cricket Association.

Manik Gupta lost his life in a tragic incident as he was attacked by a swarm of bees while officiating a cricket match. At the drinks break during the match, the umpire was heading towards the other umpire when a swarm of bees suddenly attacked everyone.

According to a report by news agency ANI, a match between YMCC and Paramount was underway at Sapru Stadium, Shuklaganj in Unnao when the incident happened. The veteran umpire lost his balance and fell, and the bees attacked him after that.

With the passing of Manik Gupta, a 30-year era comes to an end

After the incident, Rahul Sapru- a former Ranji player, drove the umpire to a private hospital in his own car. However, Manik’s health declined because of the severity of the allergic reaction and his heart condition. He was later sent to Kanpur’s Hallett Hospital, where he was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Manik’s fellow umpire Jagdish Sharma said, ”We were attacked by a swarm of bees during the drinks break. We ran, but since Manik bhai was older, he couldn’t outrun the bees. While everyone lay on the ground, the bees attacked all those present. Manik was severely attacked.”

Dinesh Katiyar, General Manager of the Kanpur Cricket Association, informed that Manik Gupta was a full-time umpire and the match fees received from officiating in local matches was his primary source of income. The KCA official also informed that Manik was a diabetes patient and the bee attack shook him, meaning his recovery was impossible.

Manik’s brother Amit Kumar Gupta said:

”His match had ended, and his fellow umpire was umpiring in a separate match. Manik went to him during  the drinks break. They were both having tea, and a swarm of bees came from behind and attacked everyone present. He lost his balance and fell while trying to outrun the bees. The whole swarm of bees attacked him. Others were also attacked by the bees. He was umpiring for around 30 years. He was a state panel umpire.”
