Upul Tharanga has been named as the chairman of the new selection committee of Sri Lankan cricket team.

Upul Tharanga has been named chairman of the new selection committee announced by Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) board on December 13, 2023. This new ‘Cricket Selection Committee’  has been formed for a period of two years.

Sri Lanka cricket underwent a huge upheaval during the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 as the board tussled with Sports Minister over selection issues. It even led to minister suspending the entire SLC and appointed an ad hoc board in chairmanship of 1996 World Cup winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga.

However, Mohan de Silva, the then SLC head, went to court and got the decision overturned. But in meantime, ICC had suspended SLC for interfering with the government. Then the president of Sri Lanka sacked sports minister Roshan Ranasinghe, who had different views from that of the president. He had also refused to to withdraw the sacking of the board.

In the latest development, Sri Lanka’s new sports minister, Harin Fernando revoked the sacking of the country’s cricket board over allegations of corruption. This was done in hopes of getting ICC to end the suspension of Sri Lanka cricket board.

“The appointment of the new committee, which comes into immediate effect, was made by the Honorable Minister of Sports and Youth Affairs, Harin Fernando,” a statement from Sri Lanka Cricket read.
