Varun Chakravarthy finished ICC Champions Trophy 2025 as India’s joint-highest wicket-taker.

Varun Chakravarthy made a historic comeback to international cricket after failing to impress in his first stint in 2021. He had a terrible display during the ICC T20 World Cup 2021 in Dubai. But now, he is probably among the first-choice Indian players in white-ball cricket.

His return to international cricket has helped India get success, and his stature as an international spinner has certainly gained more popularity. After doing well in T20Is, Varun was given a go in ODI cricket as well

He didn’t disappoint and helped India win the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in UAE. Varun was at his best in Dubai, finishing the tournament as the joint second-highest wicket-taker despite not playing the first two games. Varun scalped nine wickets in just three innings at an economy rate of 4.53 and a superb strike rate of 15.11.

Varun Chakravarthy on his test cricket future for Team India

After getting success in ODIs and T20Is, Varun Chakravarthy can be a handy option for India in test cricket because of the mystery spin he brings with him. He even wants to play test cricket for India, but is mindful of the challenges he might have in the toughest format of the game.

In a podcast with Gobinath, the 33-year-old admitted that he wants to don the Indian test jersey. But, Varun also said that his bowling style can only allow him to bowl a maximum of 10-15 overs a day, while as a spinner, one needs to bowl even 20-30 in a single day.

Varun said, “I do (have an interest in Test cricket), but my bowling style doesn’t suit Test cricket. Mine is almost like a medium pace. In Test cricket, you have to continuously bowl 20-30 overs. I can’t do that in my bowling. Since I bowl quickly, the maximum I can bowl is 10-15 overs, which is not suited for red ball. I am focusing on 20 overs and 50 overs of white ball cricket for now.”

The 33-year-old revealed that he started as a wicket-keeper before switching to pace bowling during his college time. However, he had an injury, which forced him to try spin. Eventually, it helped him become an international star and represent India at the highest level.

Varun Chakravarthy also said that the pitches across Tamil Nadu are dry and slow, which help spinners. That is the reason, it is very hard to find a genuine quick from Tamil Nadu, and this state has given many world class spinners to the game.
