Viacom18 acquires BCCI home season TV and digital rights for next 5 years

Viacom18 emerged triumphant in battle for BCCI home season broadcasting rights.
On August 31st, a competition unfolded among Disney Star, Sony Sports, and Viacom 18 for the media rights of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI). Eventually, Viacom18 emerged victorious, securing the highly coveted TV and digital rights for India’s home matches.
This triumph in the BCCI auction bestows upon Viacom18 the exclusive privileges to broadcast both TV and digital transmissions, underscoring their sole authority over matches played on home turf. With this strategic win, Viacom18 assumes a pivotal role in delivering the thrill of cricket to fans across various platforms.
Viacom18 makes a five-years contract with BCCI
Viacom18’s achievement is further cemented by a substantial five-years contract with BCCI, spanning from 2023 to 2028. In addition to their existing feats, such as obtaining IPL digital rights on Jio Cinema, they now shoulder the responsibility of showcasing India’s home matches on both television and digital mediums. Viacom18 have effectively secured the media rights for BCCI’s home international games. Despite being a relatively new entrant, recognised for its live broadcasts on Jio Cinema and Sports 18 television channels, Viacom18 has successfully clinched both digital and television broadcasting rights by agreeing to a price of INR 67.8 crore per game.
The final sum exceeds the previous cycle’s value by around Rs 7.8 crore, fulfilling the BCCI’s stipulation that surpasses Rs 60 crore. In collaboration, Viacom18, backed by Mukesh Ambani’s-led Reliance Industries and led by Uday Shankar, who played a transformative role in India’s broadcasting industry during his tenure at Star India, will contribute a total of Rs 5966.4 crore over the span of five years.
As per the agreement that extends until March 2028, Viacom18 are scheduled to broadcast a total of 88 games, commencing with a three-match ODI series against Australia at the end of September.
