Virat Kohli played 123 tests for India from 2011 to 2025.
Indian cricketer Virat Kohli announced his retirement from test cricket on Monday, May 12. The right-handed batsman shared a long post on Instagram with his photo to inform everyone about his test retirement. Kohli played a total of 123 tests for India during his 14-year-long test career.
The right-handed batsman made his test debut in June 2011 during a test series against West Indies. He could not grab the limelight in his debut series; however, later emerged as one of the best batters to represent Indian Cricket Team in tests. Kohli also led the Indian team from 2014 to 2022 in 68 games and is the most successful Indian captain with 40 test victories.
What does #269 signify in Virat Kohli’s test retirement announcement?
Notably, Virat Kohli mentioned number 269 in his farewell post on Instagram after test retirement. “I’ll always look back at my Test career with a smile. #269, signing off,” he concluded his post with this line.
Some fans were clueless about the connection of number 269 with Kohli and were confused why the former India test skipper used this particular number in his retirement post. Notably, the number 269 represents Kohli’s test cap number. Kohli was the 269th player to represent India in tests.
Virat Kohli made his test debut against West Indies on June 20, 2011, at Sabina Park, Jamaica. He received his maiden test cap during this match and got out for 4 and 15 across both innings. However, India won the match by 63 runs.
Although Kohli has retired from T20Is and tests, he will continue to represent the national side in ODIs. After the England tour, the Indian Team is scheduled to tour Bangladesh for a white-ball series. The series comprises three ODIs and three T20Is. Hence, this will be Kohli’s next assignment in the national jersey.
He is currently busy with Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which has been suspended for a week and might restart soon. Notably, the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) opener Kohli has shown a stunning form this season. He is the leading run-scorer for RCB and fourth overall with 505 runs. Kohli has also slammed seven half-centuries in the tournament.
