Virat Kohli breaks Anil Kumble's record for most catches by an Indian fielder in ICC Cricket World Cup
Virat Kohli took a brilliant catch to dismiss all-rounder Mitchell Marsh.
Indian pace bowler Jasprit Bumrah had a terrific start to the game against Australia at Chepauk as he dismissed Mitchell Marsh on a 6-ball duck in his second over. India and Australia are going head-to-head against each other to begin their respective ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign in India. Australia captain Pat Cummins asked his batters to set a huge target for India at Chepauk in Chennai. Indian pacers had a terrific start to the game.
Virat Kohli’s contribution to India’s first breakthrough was immense, as he took a great diving catch to his left. Marsh got a big outside edge against Jasprit Bumrah, and Virat Kohli grabbed the ball flying to his left and gave Australia an early set-back. With this catch, Virat Kohli has become India’s leading fielder with the most number of catches in ODI World Cup. Marsh’s catch was Kohli’s 15th in the tournament to become the leading fielder.
Virat Kohli's new record
India’s one of the finest athletes, Virat, left behind legendary leg-spinner Anil Kumble. Anil Kumble had 14 catches under his name in 18 World Cup games. Kumble was also one of India's finest outfielders and took many memorable catches for team India in his three World Cup campaigns. Virat Kohli is now leading the chart with 15 catches in 27 games. Kapil Dev and Sachin Tendulkar are joint 3rd on this list with 12 catches.
Overall, former Australian captain Ricky Ponting is the number one fielder in terms of the most catches taken. Ricky Ponting, in his five World Cup campaigns, took 28 catches. Joe Root is a second with 20 catches in 18 games. Former Sri Lankan captain Mahela Jayawardene is the leading fielder in ODI cricket with the most number of catches. Jayawardene had taken 218 catches in his ODI career.
Virat Kohli has taken 146 catches so far in his ODI career. Australia are two wickets down in Chennai inside 20 overs. Kuldeep Yadav got David Warner (41) out after a decent 69-run stand he put along with Steve Smith for the second wicket. Chepauk will be a sticky wicket, and anything above 250–260 will be a challenging score as the conditions help bowlers. India are playing without Shubman Gill.
