Virat Kohli got out for 23 runs in the second ODI against New Zealand in Rajkot.
Niranjan Shah Stadium in Rajkot is hosting the second ODI between the Indian Cricket Team and the New Zealand Cricket Team on Wednesday, January 14. Virat Kohli, who scored a half-century in the first game, could not replicate his heroics in the encounter.
At the start, India suffered a blow as New Zealand won the toss and opted to bowl first. At the toss, Indian captain Shubman Gill revealed that they have made just one change to their playing XI.
Due to an injury in the opening game, Washington Sundar was ruled out of the remainder of the series. In his absence, all-rounder Nitish Kumar Reddy was inducted into the playing XI.
Openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill gave a decent start to batting, taking the scoreboard to 70/1 in 12.2 overs. While Rohit got out for 24 runs, Gill went on to score consecutive fifties in the series with his 56 runs. He also registered the same score in the first ODI in Vadodara.
After Sharma’s dismissal in the 13th over, Kohli arrived at the crease. Having clinched the Player of the Match award in the last game, he was confident to come up with another big show against the Black Caps.
He started well with two boundaries and also etched a stand of 29 runs with Gill for the second wicket. However, the 37-year-old could not bat for long as he became a victim of pacer Kristian Clarke in the 24th over, scoring 23 runs off 29 deliveries.
Bowling right-arm over the wicket, the Kiwi pacer bowled a back-of-a-length delivery on the off-side. Kohli could not judge the ball and tried to play it towards mid-on. However, the ball moved inwards and hit the stumps, as the Indian batter was shocked over his dismissal.
Watch: Virat Kohli’s dismissal reminds fans of ICC World Cup 2023 final

Interestingly, Virat Kohli‘s dismissal reminded many cricket fans of the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 final, where he was dismissed similarly against Australia. The video of Kohli’s dismissal went viral on the micro-blogging platform X (formerly Twitter).
In the summit clash of the ODI World Cup 2023, Australia captain Pat Cummins dismissed Kohli in the 29th over with a similar delivery. His dismissal came as a big blow for India as they also lost openers Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill cheaply in the clash.
Furthermore, India failed to post a big score in the first innings (240/10), as the team’s batting order collapsed after Kohli’s dismissal. Later, Australia chased down the target by six wickets with a century by Travis Head.
