Virat Kohli & Gautam Gambhir not on talking terms? BCCI Secretary Devajit Saikia drops huge statement

Gautam Gambhir and Virat Kohli were teammates before Gambhir began his stint as India’s head coach.

Virat Kohli started his international career well after Gautam Gambhir and is the second-highest run-scorer in ODI cricket at the moment. The former Indian skipper has scored 86 international centuries and is now just 14 away from getting to 100 international hundreds.

Gambhir’s career has transformed as a coach of the Indian cricket team after he played international cricket for more than a decade. Together, Kohli and Gambhir played a lot of cricket for India and were a part of the 2011 World Cup-winning team.

Today, when Gambhir is the coach of the Indian team, Kohli finds himself playing just one format for the national team, which is the ODI format. Many blame Gambhir for Kohli and Rohit’s early Test retirements. Gambhir is often criticised for his calls as the coach of the national team and for showing favouritism against particular players.

There also have been reports which claimed after Rohit Sharma was sacked as the ODI captain, Kohli was unhappy and didn’t talk to Gambhir.

However, in a recent interaction with India Today, Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) secretary Devajit Saikia has shed light on the relationship between the two cricketers and denied any reports of rift between the two of them.

“I have never seen them fighting. They’re in a very good, cordial relationship, because I’m with them when they’re representing the country,” said Saikia while speaking on the India Today podcast.

Gambhir, along with chief selector Ajit Agarkar, has been criticised for not securing the duo’s position in the Indian team for the 2027 ODI World Cup. Ajit Agarkar also stated during a press conference that both Rohit Sharma and Kohli were non-committal about featuring in the next ODI World Cup.

Gambhir and Ajit Agarkar’s opinion was key behind naming Shubman Gill as India’s Test and ODI captain right after Rohit won the Champions Trophy as captain in March 2025. This was after he also won the T20 World Cup 2024 as captain, ending India’s drought of not winning an ICC trophy for almost 11 years.

Kohli and Rohit were both asked to play domestic cricket in a bid to stake their claims for playing the 2027 ODI World Cup. They did that and shined there and well, silencing all the critics.
