Virat Kohli has scored six test hundreds on Australian soil.

Virat Kohli is widely regarded as one of the greatest batsmen of the modern era. While his dominance in ODIs has cemented his legacy as arguably the greatest in the 50-over format, his numbers in test cricket are not far behind.

Kohli has scored over 9,000 runs in the longest format at a batting average of over 47. While he has dominated every opposition, he has taken a particular liking of Australia, especially away from home. His numbers on the Australian soil, where the pace and bounce suit his stroke-playing ability, are phenomenal.

Kohli has amassed over 1300 runs in Australia at an average of 54. His impressive tally includes six centuries and four half-centuries.

On that note, let’s look at the top five highest test scores by Virat Kohli on Australian soil.

Top five highest test scores by Virat Kohli on Australian soil:

5. 116 – Adelaide, 2012

Virat Kohli’s maiden test century in Australia came during the fourth test in Adelaide of the 2011/12 series. India came into the Adelaide test 3-0 behind in the series. Additionally, Kohli’s place in the test team was under scrutiny due to the lack of big scores.

Kohli’s hundred came in India’s reply to Australia’s mammoth 604 runs total in the first innings. His innings included 11 fours and a six. He formed a 115-run partnership with Wriddhiman Saha to drag India to the 272-run mark. However, India lost the game by 298 runs.

4. 123 – Perth, 2018

Described by Kohli himself as one of his favourite hundreds, this innings came on the seaming wicket in Perth during the second test of the 2018 tour.

On a pitch that offered plenty of assistance to the fast bowlers, Kohli stood as the rock of the Indian batting lineup, scoring a brilliant hundred (123), consisting of 13 fours and a six.

Despite his heroics in the first innings, India fell short in the match, losing by 146 runs while chasing 287.

3. 141 – Adelaide, 2014

One of Kohli’s most remarkable knocks came during the thrilling Adelaide test in 2014. Chasing a daunting target of 364 on the final day, Kohli scored a fluent 141. His innings, which included 16 fours and a six, nearly guided India to a historic win.

Unfortunately, the Indian team suffered a dramatic collapse, slipping from 242/2 to 315/10 and losing the game by 48 runs. Nathan Lyon was named Player of the Match for his seven-wicket hall in India’s second innings.

2. 147 – Sydney, 2014

Kohli capped off his thunderous 2014 tour of Australia with a 147-run knock in Sydney. Kohli’s epic innings at the Sydney Cricket Ground (SCG) marked his fourth century of the series.

Coming in response to Australia’s massive first-innings total of 572, Kohli led India’s reply, hitting 20 fours in his innings. He formed a crucial 140-run partnership for the third wicket with KL Rahul, who scored his maiden test hundred.

The match ended in a draw, with India displaying resilience on the final day.

1. 169 – Melbourne, 2014

Virat Kohli’s highest test score in Australia came during the Boxing Day test in Melbourne in 2014. Kohli top scored for India in a test widely remembered for his and Ajinkya Rahane’s solid 260-run partnership in the first innings.

Kohli’s brilliant 169, which included 18 fours, played a crucial role in India’s first innings total of 465 runs. The test ended in a hard-fought draw, with MS Dhoni and Ravichandran Ashwin batting out the last 13 overs on the final day to save the test.
