Virat Kohli won the Player of the Match award in IND vs NZ 1st ODI.

Veteran Indian batter Virat Kohli made a fabulous start to 2026, smacking a half-century in the first ODI against New Zealand. The right-handed batter remained short of the three-figure mark by just seven runs, scoring 93 runs to play a pivotal role in India’s victory in the encounter in Vadodara.

With his batting heroics, Shubman Gill & Co. outplayed the Black Caps by four wickets in the opening game. The hosts chased down a 301-run target, gaining the 1-0 lead. Kohli was adjudged Player of the Match.

In the second game, Kohli failed to make a mark with the bat, getting out for 23 runs. India, who batted first in the clash, also lost the match by four wickets. However, with his impeccable consistent form in the 50-over format in recent times, Kohli has moved to the top spot in ICC’s ODI batting rankings.

After failing to go big in the second game, Kohli will look for a comeback in the IND vs NZ 3rd ODI, which is taking place on Sunday, January 18, at Holkar Cricket Stadium in Indore.

Luck favoured Shubman Gill at the toss, as he won it and opted to bowl first. They made just one change to their playing XI, replacing pacer Prasidh Krishna with Arshdeep Singh.

While Virat Kohli is known for his fabulous fielding, he fumbled once in the third ODI against the Kiwis in Indore. In one of the overs, Kohli ran towards the ball while fielding. However, he was unable to collect the ball in one attempt, and it bounced off his hands several times.

After not getting hold of the ball, the Indian batting legend got upset and frustrated with himself over his fielding. As a result, he kicked the ball in anger, and the video of the moment was shared on the social media platform X (formerly Twitter). Have a look at the video below.

However, Daryl Mitchell (137) and Glenn Phillips (106) hammered centuries as the visitors posted 337 runs on the scoreboard after 50 overs.
