Virat Kohli and KL Rahul played all five games of the BGT 2024-25.
India’s recent poor batting performance in test cricket has sparked a debate about the importance of domestic cricket for top international players.
Virat Kohli, in particular, has faced criticism for his poor performances in the home test series against New Zealand and the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) in Australia. Additionally, his last Ranji Trophy appearance was in 2012.
To address the issue, the BCCI released a list of dos and don’ts for all players on Thursday, which included mandatory participation in domestic cricket. Players unavailable to play will need approval from the national chairman of selectors.
While players like Rishabh Pant (Delhi), Shubman Gill (Punjab), and Ravindra Jadeja (Saurashtra) are expected to play in the next round, reports suggest that senior batters Virat Kohli and KL Rahul are likely to miss the domestic games.
Virat Kohli, KL Rahul to miss next round of Ranji Trophy due to injury – Reports
According to a report in ESPNCricinfo, Virat Kohli and KL Rahul have informed the BCCI medical staff that they are carrying niggles and will not be able to play the next round of Ranji Trophy games starting on January 23.
Kohli reportedly took an injection for neck pain on January 8 after the conclusion of BGT 2024-25 and has now informed the BCCI staff that he is still experiencing pain. This will keep him out of Delhi’s next Ranji Trophy game against Saurashtra in Rajkot.
KL Rahul, on the other hand, has reported an elbow injury that will keep him out of Karnataka’s game against Punjab in Bengaluru. He was India’s third-highest run-scorer in the BGT 2024-25 with 276 runs at an average of 30.66.
India‘s next red-ball assignment is the five-match test series in England, starting in June. The Indian management will hope for a better batting performance to have a chance of winning the series against a new-look English bowling attack.
