Virat Kohli has played 123 tests for Indian Cricket Team so far.

Indian veteran cricketer Virat Kohli might pull the curtains on his test career, according to certain reports. The 36-year-old is a crucial batsman for the side in the longest format. A few days ago, Indian ODI skipper Rohit Sharma announced his retirement from test cricket.

Indian Cricket Team will soon begin their campaign for the forthcoming ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. They will tour England in June for a five-match test series; which will conclude in the first week of August. After Sharma retirement from the longest format, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) also need to nominate a new skipper for the test team.

Virat Kohli informs about his test retirement plans to BCCI: Reports

According to a report in ESPN Cricinfo, Kohli has been in talks with BCCI for the past month over his retirement from test cricket. However, he is yet to confirm his decision to the BCCI. Notably, he was expected to be part of Indian test squad for the England tour. Kohli is currently busy with Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025, which has been suspended by BCCI for a week.

The right-handed batsman has played 123 tests in his career so far. He has mustered 9230 runs across 210 innings averaging 46.85. Kohli has also slammed 30 centuries in the longest format including seven double centuries. He made his test debut in June 2011 in a series against West Indies and has been a regular member of the test side since then.

In India’s last test campaign against Australia during the Border-Gavaskar Trophy (BGT) 2024-25, Kohli scored a century in the first match in Perth. However, he could add only 85 runs across remaining eight innings in the series at a poor average of 12.14.

Kohli, who also led the test side until January 2022, is the most successful Indian captain in test cricket. He led the team to 40 victories out of 68 games as skipper. After Kohli hung up his boots as test skipper, Sharma took the leadership of the side.
