Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma both scored centuries in recently concluded WI test series.

Former India captain Sunil Gavaskar has once again slammed the Indian national selection panel for not showing any vision for the future in the recently concluded West Indies test series. Though team India won the series by 1-0, Sunil Gavaskar was unhappy with the panel's approach of not giving the younger players a go against relatively weak West Indies in the red-ball format.

India went in with only one change in the batting order but had a young pace bowling attack. Gavaskar questioned whether selectors are worried about younger players challenging big established players in the team India. Rohit and Virat scored runs in the series and ended among the top 3 leading run-scorers.

Gavaskar slams Indian selection panel

Former Indian Captain Sunil Gavaskar wrote in his column in Mid-day “The runs scored by Rohit and Virat against this West Indies attack begs the question what did the selectors learn that they didn’t know. Wouldn’t it have been better to try out some youngsters and see how they take to test cricket or is it that the selectors don’t want any sort of challenge from the younger lot to established players?.”

Gavaskar in his latest column written for Mid-day, also hoped that things may change a bit under a new chairman in the selection panel. Ajit Agarkar became the chairman of selectors of Indian cricket team earlier this month. "Now that Ajit Agarkar has come on board as the Chairman of the selection committee let’s see if there is going to be any change in the approach to building a team for the future or if it’s going to be the same old story of the Indian team being the bridesmaid but not the bride." added Gavaskar.

Team India dropped Cheteshwar Pujara for his continuous poor show with the bat in 2023. A new number 3 batter tried but failed. Shubman Gill will get a good run at his desired position in test cricket despite failures on the West Indies tour.

Yashasvi Jaiswal made his test debut and smashed 173 runs in his maiden test innings, similarly, Ishan Kishan also impressed in his first test series as a keeper first and then with the bat in the final innings. Mukesh Kumar also had a great debut at Queen Park Oval. India is slowly heading towards a transition in all three formats.
