Virat Kohli retired from T20I cricket after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024.
Virat Kohli is arguably the best all-format batter in the modern generation. He has been dominating the world of cricket for more than a decade now. Though he has reached the last stage of his career, he still has good two to three years of cricket left in him.
Virat Kohli has already retired from T20 internationals. He hung up his boots, along with Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja, after India won the ICC T20 World Cup 2024, beating South Africa in the final. That decision came as a shock to many, but that ended Virat’s T20I career.
He is still active in other two formats of international cricket. However, in a recent interview, Virat hinted at coming out of his T20I retirement to represent India once again. But, he has also put a condition for it.
Virat Kohli speaks on coming out of T20I retirement
Virat Kohli retired from T20I as one of the most decorated cricketers in this format. He played 125 games and scored 4188 runs at an average of 48.69 and a strike rate of 137.04, with one century and 38 half-centuries.
Virat holds many records in this format and is the only cricketer to have won the Player of the Tournament award multiple times in ICC T20 World Cup history. He is still active in the Indian Premier League (IPL), and in his recent interaction, he revealed that he might come out of T20I retirement.
Kohli in the interaction revealed that he is willing to come out of T20I retirement if India qualify for the final of LA28 Olympics in Men’s Cricket Competition, which will be played in T20I format.
In an interaction on the Innovation Lab Indian Sports Summit, Virat said, “I don’t know. Maybe if we are playing for a gold medal, that is much taken for one game, get a medal. Come back home. No, but I think it is a great thing, and to be Olympic champions would be an absolutely magnificent feeling.”
The next Olympics is scheduled to showcase in Los Angeles in 2028. The 36-year-old is among the fittest sportspeople in this game. But it might take a lot for him to keep playing the game till then. It all depends on how he goes about the business in the coming years as the Olympics 2028 is still a long way to go. He will be in action in the IPL 2025 for Royal Challengers Bengaluru and will be featuring in the tournament’s opener on March 22.
