Virat Kohli played a crucial role in the revival of test cricket.

Virat Kohli and Test cricket were once inseparable. At his peak, Kohli redefined India’s approach in the longest format with relentless intensity, elite fitness standards, and an insatiable hunger for runs.

Between 2016 and 2019, he was arguably the most dominant Test batter in the world, piling up double hundreds, thriving overseas, and leading India to historic victories in Australia while competing fiercely in England and South Africa.

His records speak for themselves, with over 9,000 Test runs, 30 centuries, and one of the finest overseas captaincy records by an Indian skipper.

However, the decline began around 2020. Kohli’s century drought, struggles outside off stump, and reduced impact in pressure situations became increasingly visible. While he continued to contribute with leadership and intent, the output no longer matched his own extraordinary benchmarks.

Despite flashes of form, consistency eluded him, and younger bowlers began to exploit technical gaps that once seemed minor. Eventually, Kohli announced his retirement from Test cricket, following team India’s series defeat to Australia, bringing an era to a close.

Since then, India’s struggles in Test batting have been hard to ignore. Collapses in overseas conditions, a lack of big hundreds, and an over-reliance on bowlers have exposed a fragile middle order.

Naturally, speculation has surfaced about whether Kohli could be tempted to return and stabilize the side. The answer, however, is a clear no.

The current Indian management has taken a firm stance against the old superstar-driven culture. The focus has shifted to a younger, Gill-centric batting core, with long-term planning prioritised over short-term fixes.

Reversing a Test retirement would go against this philosophy and undermine the transition already underway. Moreover, Kohli’s equation with head coach Gautam Gambhir has never been smooth, and the present leadership setup is unlikely to revisit past hierarchies.

Just as importantly, Kohli is not someone who takes U-turns. When he steps away, it is usually after deep reflection. His legacy in Test cricket is secure, and a return would risk diluting that legacy rather than enhancing it.

India must move forward, and Kohli, characteristically, will let the next generation carry the torch. Any articles or rumours suggesting otherwise, are purely agenda driven.
