Virat Kohli retires: Check his numbers in test cricket

Virat Kohli announced his retirement from test cricket on May 12.
On May 12, 2025, Virat Kohli put an end to his incredible test career, which spanned or 14 years. The right-handed batsman took the decision before Indian Cricket Team commence their ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle. Kohli played his last test series against Australia in the Border-Gavarkar Trophy 2024-25 Down Under.
The 36-year-old thoroughly struggled in his last test series against the Aussies. He piled up just 190 runs across nine innings; losing his wicket for low scores across four tests. His only good knock in the series – a hundred – came in India’s sole win of the series in Perth.
Undoubtedly, Kohli is one of the best batters and captains to ever play for India in the longest format. As captain, he led the team to the final of the inaugural edition of ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2019-21. However, India lost the final to New Zealand.
Kohli made his test debut in June 2011 during a test series against West Indies. He went on to become a regular member of the test side and achieved the rare record of playing 100 test matches for India. Only 14 Indian players have captured this feat so far. On that note, let’s take a look at his numbers in test cricket.
Virat Kohli batting record in test cricket:
Virat Kohli finished his career with 123 tests for Indian Cricket Team. He scored 9230 runs across 210 innings at a batting average of 46.85. He also scored 31 half-centuries and 30 centuries. This also included seven double centuries – the most by any Indian batter so far.
He will be widely remembered for his incredible batting show in India tour of England 2018. Leading the India team in the series, Kohli slammed 593 runs in 10 innings to win the Player of the Series award. He stormed two centuries and three half-centuries in the series, which India lost (1-4).
Kohli scored his top knock of unbeaten 254* runs against South Africa in October 2019 in MCA (Maharashtra Cricket Association) Stadium in Pune.

Virat Kohli captaincy record in test cricket:
Kohli took the leadership of the test side in December 2014, when MS Dhoni decided to retire from the format. While Dhoni continued to lead in the white-ball formats, Kohli took charge in whites.
Kohli owns the marvellous achievement of leading the team to the first-ever test series victory in Australia. In January 2019, the Kohli-led Indian team defeated Australia 2-1 in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy Down Under to script history.
He went on to lead the side until January 2022, when he stepped down as test skipper following India’s test series defeat to South Africa. Interestingly, Kohli has been the most successful test captain for India. He led the side in 68 tests; winning 40 and losing 17. Out of these, 11 matches ended in draw. Kohli recorded a win percentage of 58.82 in the longest format.
