Indian Cricket Team batter Virat Kohli broke the silence on the rumours related to his test retirement. He openly mentioned that he will be playing only one format and this is how it will be till he retires from the game of cricket.
After India lost the test series against South Africa 2-0, there were various reports which claimed that the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is planning to bring in former players for short term in tests. The reports added that they want Kohli back as the side has been struggling badly.
Kohli announced his test retirement in May 2025 and it came as a massive shock as many expected him to be on the flight to England for the five-test series. However, that wasn’t the case as he retired from the format he loved the most.
Under the leadership of Kohli, India were a different beast in test cricket. They never lost a series at home, which now has become a norm. Amid all the rumours of his test comeback, the batter slammed a magical century in the first ODI against South Africa.

Virat Kohli hit 135 off 120 and won the Player of the Match award. At the post-match presentation, Harsha Bhogle asked him if he was going to play just one format. Replying to this, he said:
“That’s how it is going to be,” said Kohli
When Virat Kohli announced his retirement from tests, he explained how the format taught him a lot. In an Instagram post, he had said:
“It’s been 14 years since I first wore the baggy blue in Test cricket. Honestly, I never imagined the journey this format would take me on. It’s tested me, shaped me, and taught me lessons I’ll carry for life,” Kohli said in his retirement statement. “There’s something deeply personal about playing in whites. The quiet grind, the long days, the small moments that no one sees but that stay with you forever.“
Virat Kohli ended his test career as the most successful captain of India in the format. Also, he mustered 9230 runs with 30 centuries.
