Virender Sehwag leaves out Virat Kohli as he predicts highest run-scorer of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023
Former Indian opener Virender Sehwag has predicted leadin run-scorer of the upcoming World Cup.
Former Indian opening batter and India’s impact player in the 2011 World Cup, Virender Sehwag played a massive role in India’s World Cup-winning campaign. Sehwag’s 175-runs knock against Bangladesh, starting with a boundary in the first ball in almost every game, provided India with the dominating start they needed in the 2011 World Cup games. Sehwag has now predicted current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma to become the highest run-getter in the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup in India. Sehwag feels that Rohit Sharma could dominate the tournament.
Virender Sehwag picks Rohit, leave out Kohli
Very interestingly, former Indian opening batter has left out Virat Kohli from this list and picked current Indian skipper Rohit Sharma. In a video posted by the ICC on Instagram, Sehwag said, “India has got good wickets, so I think openers will get good opportunities. If I want to pick one, I think Rohit Sharma. There are a couple of names, but I am Indian, and I should pick an Indian, so Rohit Sharma.” Virender Sehwag also predicted that the World Cup 2023 will have batting-friendly conditions and that openers will have a lot of impact in the tournament.
Praising Rohit Sharma, former Indian cricketer said that his energy level always goes up in the big tournaments. Sehwag added, “When the World Cup comes, his energy level and his performance go up. So I am sure he will do well. And this time, he’s the captain as well. I am sure that he will make a difference and will score lots of runs. Rohit Sharma has wonderful stats in the World Cup. In the 2019 edition, Rohit Sharma smashed five centuries in the tournament and ended up as the leading run-getter. He has 978 runs in 17 innings, including six centuries and three fifties.
Captain Rohit Sharma is close to completing 10,000 runs in the ODI format. Rohit is 163 runs away from the 10,000 milestone in the one-day international format. The upcoming Asia Cup will be an opportunity for him to get back into the rhythm of the 50-over format and make himself ready for the ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 in India. India will open their World Cup campaign against Australia at Chepauk Stadium in Chennai on October 8.
