Wanindu Hasaranga announces shocking retirement from test cricket at the age of 26 years
Wanindu Hasaranga represented his country in whites in only four games.
In a decision conveyed to the Sri Lankan Cricket Board, the talented Wanindu Hasaranga has made a significant announcement he is stepping away from test cricket. This move is driven by his desire to concentrate on shorter formats, particularly One Day Internationals (ODIs) and Twenty20 Internationals (T20Is), where he has shown his remarkable skills. Hasaranga has also made a mark beyond international cricket, being a part of the IPL team Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB).
During his 4 Test appearances for Sri Lanka, Wanindu Hasaranga managed to take only 4 wickets, with his best performance of 4/171. He went wicket-less in remaining three tests he played, which shows he was a mediocre bowler in the longest format of the game. He also managed to score 196 runs in total, maintaining an average of 28.00. His highest score was an impressive 59. Yet, his true prowess comes to life in limited-overs cricket.
In 48 ODIs, Wanindu Hasaranga has so far taken 67 wickets, boasting an impressive 6/24 as his best figures. His average of 28.77 and economy rate of 5.07 demonstrated his effective bowling impact, averaging 34.0 deliveries per wicket taken. He accumulated 832 runs at an average of 23.77, with his highest score being an unbeaten 80*. Hasaranga’s best has come so far in the shortest format of the game, T20Is, where he has taken 91 wickets in 58 matches and scored 533 runs being handy with the bat as well.
Wanindu Hasaranga to only focus on shorter formats of the game
The choice to retire from test cricket showcases Hasaranga’s strategic mindset. By opting to focus on formats where he excels, he is positioning himself for a longer and more impactful cricket career. In the T20I arena, he has showcased his talent remarkably. With 533 runs and 91 wickets in 58 matches.
Hasaranga’s journey extends beyond international cricket. As part of the IPL team RCB, he has been a dynamic force. In 26 matches, he has taken 35 wickets, including a stunning performance of 5/18, showcasing his bowling brilliance. His economy rate of 7.54 and an average of 16.54 highlight his consistent impact.
