On Thursday (29th August), Sri Lanka Cricket announced the squad for Asia Cup 2025. The tournament, which will be played in the United Arab Emirates, will begin on 9th September and witness the final on 28th September.
The main highlight of Sri Lanka’s squad was the addition of Wanindu Hasaranga. The premier leg-spinner will be missing the series against Zimbabwe due to the hamstring injury that he sustained during the series against Bangladesh recently.
Wanindu Hasaranga has replaced Dushan Hemantha in the Sri Lanka squad for Asia Cup 2025. Dushan has been named in the team for the Zimbabwe series. Out of that squad, uncapped batter Vishen Halambage has also been left out, which is the only other change.
Sri Lanka will be captained by Charith Asalanka and the squad will see the return of Chamika Karunaratne. Also, Nuwanidu Fernando, Kamil Mishara, and fast bowler Dushmantha Chameera have found a place in the team for the eight-nation tournament.
Former skipper Dasun Shanaka returned to the team as well, while selectors ignored Angelo Matthews for Asia Cup 2025. The veteran all-rounder retired from test cricket recently but confirmed that he will be available for the white-ball games for Sri Lanka.
Along with Wanindu Hasaranga, Dunith Wellalage and Maheesh Theekshana are the frontline spinners in the team. Sri Lanka, who won the Asia Cup 2021, would be keen to lift another title. They reached the final in the last edition but lost to India.
