Washington Sundar said he was glad to see Gautam Gambhir happy at the end of the series.

Indian all-rounder Washington Sundar has heaped praise on head coach Gautam Gambhir after the recently concluded Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy. Under Gambhir’s coaching, India drew the test series 2-2 against England.

Sundar impressed with his batting and bowling performances during the series. The 25-year-old slammed his maiden test century in second innings of the fourth test in Manchester, helping India draw the game. In the third test at the Lord’s, he clinched a four-wicket haul in a losing cause.

Across eight innings in four tests, Sundar mustered 284 runs at a brilliant batting average of 47.33, including one century and one fifty. At an average of 38.57, he captured seven wickets across four games to play a crucial role in the spin department.

Glad to see Gautam Gambhir happy at the end of the series: Washington Sundar

During an interview with Wisden, Sundar said Gambhir had a lot of faith in players during the England tour and he was glad to see the Indian coach happy at the end of the series. He also recalled how Gambhir was an elegant batsman in Indian Premier League (IPL), and he used to idolise him.

“He also had No. 5 on the back of his jersey (like me). And obviously he was a left-hander, who was extremely elegant. The only thing I didn’t enjoy was bowling to him in the IPL,” he said.

“He was someone who was super successful against me but he is an amazing human being. He has had so much faith in all of us that we would fight at all times and win the game. Really glad to see him happy at the end of the series,” he added.

Furthermore, the Indian all-rounder lauded Gambhir and Gill for maintaining a calm atmosphere in the dressing room during the test series against England.

“Credit to them for having such a calm dressing room throughout the series. Their communication was precise and clear on what was expected. Both of them have a lot of belief in their players and that really helps in the bigger picture,” Sundar concluded.

Trailing 2-1 in the series, India made a fabulous comeback to win the fifth test to end the series in a 2-2 draw. Gill and Siraj were stand-out performers for India in the series. While the Indian skipper finished as the highest run-scorer with 754 runs, Siraj ended as the highest wicket-taker with 23 scalps.
