Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram names his favourites to win Asia Cup 2023
Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram is in the commentary panel for the upcoming Asia Cup 2023.
The forthcoming Asia Cup 2023 promises a thrilling showcase of cricketing prowess as sub-continental giants gear up to battle for the coveted title. Beyond the competition’s trophy, this tournament holds added significance, serving as a preparation for teams for the upcoming ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 and assessing their preparedness for the global stage.
Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram, a cricketing legend known for his remarkable skills with the ball, offered insightful perspectives on the tournament’s dynamics, emphasizing the evolving role of bowlers and the absence of clear favourites.
In a cricketing world dominated by the rapid-fire pace of T20 cricket, the Asia Cup’s returns to the 50-overs format. Wasim Akram, renowned for his art of fast bowling, drew attention to a particular issue faced by modern bowlers. He believes that the Asia Cup poses a unique challenge for these bowlers, compelling them to stretch their capacities and deliver a full quota of 10 overs, while the players are accustomed to four-overs spells in T20 matches.
‘We will find out if the bowlers are able to deliver’ says Wasim Akram
“Be it India or Pakistan or Sri Lanka, we will find out if the bowlers are able to deliver 10 overs or not, nowadays they are all used to bowling four overs (per game),” Akram told during an event. The transition from limited overs to the traditional 50-overs format demands not only skill but also endurance, making the Asia Cup a pivotal platform for bowlers to showcase their mettle and adaptability.
The former skipper remains determined in his refusal to choose any single team as a favourite for the tournament. His belief that the journey to the finals will be hard and unpredictable for all sides. “You have to win games to get on top, it is a 50-overs competition (this time) not T20, which means a different mindset and fitness will be required.” He also acknowledged that the shift to a longer format necessitates distinct mental and physical preparation, a sentiment he encapsulates with
Akram’s reflected on the changing nature of the Asia Cup, drawing from past experiences. Recalling the last edition, where Sri Lanka emerged winners, he noted the unpredictability of outcomes. He concluded saying, “Last time we had predicted an India versus Pakistan final but Sri Lanka won the competition. All three teams are dangerous anyone can win on their day. There are other teams competing too. Last time Sri Lanka won the title, India even failed to make it to the final.“
