Australia batsman Steve Smith managed to score 16 and 6 in the first Ashes 2023 at Edgbaston, Birmingham.

The Ashes involves good Cricket, good banter, and a hostile crowd. Australian vice-captain Steve Smith was mocked by a hostile Edgbaston crowd on the fourth day of the first Ashes test at Edgbaston. The Edgbaston crowd reminded Steve Smith about the worst time in his career. The crowd mocked Smith by chanting ‘Saw you cry on the telly’, reminding him of the worst episode of his career. Steve Smith was banned from cricket for a year after the sandpaper gate controversy came up during Australia’s tour of South Africa in the year 2018. Steve Smith and opener David Warner both were banned by Cricket Australia.

After the incident when Steve Smith arrived in Australia, he broke down during a press conference. Similarly, David Warner also burst into tears while doing a press conference. This Sandpaper Gate episode has remained constant for Steve Smith wherever he toured. When the crowd was mocking Smith with their chants, Smith also got involved and shaked his head in a groove with the chants. While Ollie Robinson was having a good smile about it. Similarly, Smith faced this during the 2019 World Cup game against India, where Virat Kohli came forward and encouraged fans to cheer for him rather than mock him.

At the end of day 4, Australia have made the first Ashes test more interesting. Australia now require 174 runs with 7 wickets in hand on the final day. Two of their star performers Marnus Labuschagne and Steve Smith are back in the dressing room. Steve Smith didn’t had a great game as he got out on 6 in the second innings and only 16 in the first innings. Smith had scored a century against India in the World Test Championship Final. First-innings centurion Usman Khawaja is still at the crease.
