Watch: Jonny Bairstow's cold stare at Pat Cummins during players' handshakes after the Lord's test

Jonny Bairstow got dismissed in a controversial fashion in the 2nd test at The Lord's.

There was no love lost between England’s Jonny Bairstow and Australian captain Pat Cummins as after the second Ashes 2023 Test match between the two sides ended and the players were shaking their hands, the Englishman gave a death stare to the Australian skipper.

All this was because of Jonny Bairstow being run-out by Alex Carey on day 5 of the second Test at Lord’s. The match was delicately poised with Ben Stokes hammering the Australian bowlers with disdain, while he needed someone to stick with him.

Bairstow was the man and he was looking good out there.

But then, with England stuttering at 193/5, Bairstow decided to do some gardening after he ducked underneath a Cameron Green bouncer and left the crease. Australian keeper Alex Carey hit the stumps with a direct hit and Australian players appealed as the ball had not been declared dead.

The on-field umpires referred the decision to the TV umpire, who adjudged Bairstow out. This led to the England crowd booing the Australians and even calling them cheats.

The English players and fans didn't take this well. They were furious because they believed that Australia's decision to dismiss a batter in this manner violated the spirit of cricket.

Now, Bairstow can be seen shaking hands with the opposing captain Pat Cummins in a video that was posted on social media and was recorded on Day 5 after the post-match handshakes.

However, the 33-year-old gave a death stare to the Australian seamer while shaking hands. The stern expression from Bairstow kind of suggests that he was fuming from the inside after how his innings ended on Sunday.

The two teams will play again on July 6, as there is only a short break between the second and third Tests. The third Test is held in Leed’s Headingley ground. To win the Ashes 2023, England will need to win all three of the remaining Test matches.
