Best delivery of CWC 2023? Watch: Keshav Maharaj cleans up Shubman Gill in Kolkata

Opener Shubman Gill was dismissed by Keshav Maharaj after scoring 23 runs in 24 balls.

South Africa have come back nicely after picking up 2 wickets in quick succession at Eden Gardens in Kolkata against India. Team India had a fiery start with captain Rohit Sharma taking the aerial route most number of times during his stay at the wickets and getting team’s score to 50 in just 4.3 overs. Similarly, Shubman Gill was also finding boundaries with ease to support his skipper. But soon after the introduction of Kagiso Rabada and Keshav Maharaj, Proteas bounced back.

After losing Rohit Sharma in the 6th over, Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill were looking for a partnership but a ‘Ball of the World Cup 2023’ from Keshav Maharaj put India in trouble. Gill was playing a great anchor along with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as India were racing towards a big score with more than 9 runs per over. Maharaj was brought in to control the flow of runs and the decision became fruitful for the Proteas.

Maharaj’s Ball of the tournament!

South African left-arm spinner Keshav Maharaj got his line and length spot on from the first delivery itself. Maharaj delivered one on middle and leg to Shubman Gill and drew him forward to play a gentle push but Gill went for a flick shot but was not in the line of the ball. It deviated after pitching up and beat Gill’s outside edge and went straight up to hit the bails of the middle stump. Shubman Gill was stunned and he had to relook to finally decide his walk back.

Watch the video here:

Shubman Gill was surprised after the ball hit the middle stump dislodged the bails and made the umpires refer this decision upstairs. Replays showed the brilliance of Maharaj to draw Gill forward as he was taking his stance from outside of the leg stump. Gill was dismissed after scoring 23 runs in 24 balls with 4 fours and one six at the Eden Gardens. Maharaj has kept his line tight since then and not giving room to the Indian batters.

Earlier, Temba Bavuma took an outstanding catch to dismiss Indian skipper Rohit Sharma who smashed 40 runs in 24 balls with 6 fours and 2 towering sixes. Rohit’s presence was making South Africans uncomfortable as they were a little wayward with their line and length. Team India and South Africa are the two top teams in the World Cup 2023 points table, India have won all their league games so far while South Africa lost one against the Netherlands.
