Watch: Wife Ritika cheers from stands as Rohit Sharma hits fastest century by an Indian in Cricket World Cup
Indian captain Rohit Sharma smashed a 63-ball century against Afghanistan in Delhi.
India captain Rohit Sharma created history and broke a few records during his amazing knock against Afghanistan on October 11, 2023, in the ongoing ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 tournament in Delhi.
The right-handed batter smashed a 63-ball century to break former captain Kapil Dev’s four-decade-old record for the fastest century by an Indian at the World Cup. The latter had smashed a 72-ball hundred against Zimbabwe on June 18, 1983.
This was also Rohit Sharma’s 7th century in ICC World Cup history, and he broke the record of Sachin Tendulkar for most hundreds in the ICC event (6). Sharma also became only the fourth Indian batter after Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli to amass 1,000 runs in the 50-over tournament.
Rohit Sharma reached the milestone in the 17th over off the bowling of Mohammad Nabi. Rohit smashed a four and then followed it up with a single to bring up his century. Incidentally, he was out for a duck in India’s first match against Australia in Chennai.
ICC shared the video of the moment as well, in which Rohit’s wife Ritika Sajdeh is seen giving a standing ovation and clapping with a big smile on her face.

Afghanistan's batting shows their strength, but not enough as Jasprit Bumrah stars with the ball
Earlier, Afghanistan opted to bat first after captain Hashmatullah Shahidi won the toss. He also led from the front with a knock of 80 runs off 88 balls, including one six and eight boundaries. He added more than 120 runs with Azmatullah Omarazai, who made 62 off 69 deliveries, including four sixes and two fours.
But Jasprit Bumrah starred with the ball, taking 4/39, his best bowling figures in World Cups. Hardik Pandya picked up two wickets. Shardul Thakur and Kuldeep Yadav also picked up one wicket apiece. Rohit Sharma and Co. will look for consecutive wins ahead of the India vs Pakistan match at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on October 14.
