It was all drama at the Brian Lara Cricket Stadium in Tarouba during India’s chase against West Indies in the first T20I game. West Indies bowlers bravely defended their 149 runs total and defeated India by 4 runs. As India were closing to defeat, there was an instance that produced laughter during India’s chase. Yuzvendra Chahal and Mukesh Kumar were slated to bat at Number 10 and 11 respectively. India were 8th down in the last over, with just 5 balls to go in the innings. Team management’s confusion came out in the open which left everyone in laughter.
Yuzvendra Chahal or Mukesh! Team India’s chaotic decision making
Romario Shepherd castled Kuldeep Yadav in the first ball of the last over, and Yuzvendra Chahal walked out immediately after the wicket. But captain Hardik Pandya and Coach Rahul Dravid wanted Mukesh Kumar to come in to bat at 10 and asked Chahal to come back in the dressing room. Yuzvendra Chahal after entering the field walked towards the wicket and then he was suddenly called back by the management. But the umpires didn’t allow him to go back and let another batter come in, citing the rules. Chahal once again had to walk back to the wicket from the boundary line.

Everyone was surprised to see utter confusion in team India’s decision-making. India had an outside chance of winning the game in the last over as they required 10 runs in 6 balls. West Indies pace bowlers had a brilliant game and helped their team win the first of the 5-match T20I series. Mukesh Kumar and Tilak Verma made their debut for Team India. Tilak was the only batter to challenge the West Indies bowling attack and scored 39 runs in 22 balls with 2 fours and 3 sixes. Apart from him, no batter could go on to bat for long and stitch a big partnership.
West Indies made a brilliant start as they got opener Shubman Gill out stumped in Akeal Hosein’s 2nd over on just 5 runs. India didn’t get a great start to start their chase. Jason Holder bowled a magical and picked up 2 wickets. Holder got big fish Suryakumar Yadav and Hardik Pandya out. He conceded only 19 runs in his 4 overs and bowled a maiden over as well. India will take on the West Indies in the 2nd T20I at Providence Stadium in Guyana on Sunday. This series is seen as exploring options for the T20 World Cup 2024.
