Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli play only ODIs for India.
Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson has stated that the public Down Under will give lots of love and admiration to India’s greats Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli when India plays Australia in the three ODIs starting October 19.
He also stated that Kohli and Rohit, who are returning to the Indian team for the first time since March 2025, when India won ICC Champions Trophy 2025, will face one of their sternest challenges yet.
Watson stated that although both Indian greats are still ranked in the top five ODI hitters by the ICC, it will take some adjustment for them to continue dominating after concentrating just on one format.
“It’s never easy to hit the ground running after such a long gap, especially when facing a team like Australia, who have some of the best bowlers in world cricket. It might take them a little time to rediscover their rhythm and preparation routines. But with their quality and consistency, I don’t think it’ll take long before they’re back at their best,” Watson said in an interview with JioStar.
Shubman Gill has replaced Rohit Sharma as India’s ODI captain, and Rohit will play as a specialist batter alongside Virat Kohli in the Indian XI.

Given that both veterans are nearing the end of their careers, there are rumors that this may be their last Australian trip, which Watson believes the local supporters will treasure.
“This could very well be Rohit and Virat’s last trip Down Under, and I think the Australian public will take this opportunity to show just how much they admire them. Virat has been one of Australia’s fiercest competitors over the years, always performing against us and never shying away from the contest. But there’s immense respect for his greatness. The same goes for Rohit—a leader and a performer. Australians appreciate quality, and these two epitomize that,” Watson said.
Both Rohit and Kohli have shown indications of being readying themselves for ICC Cricket World Cup 2027 and have been working hard on their fitness.
