Kraigg Brathwaite stepped down as captain of West Indies test team in March.
Cricket West Indies (CWI) recently appointed a new captain and vice-captain for West Indies Cricket Team in tests. The announcement was made following Kraigg Brathwaite‘s decision to step down from captaincy in March 2025. Now, the new test captain and vice-captain will lead West Indies’ journey in the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) 2025-27 cycle.
West Indies will commence their ICC WTC 2025-27 campaign with a test series against Australia in June 2025. The Caribbean side will host the Aussies in three tests during the series. The series will commence with the first test in Barbados from June 25. The series will conclude with the third Test in Jamaica, which will start on July 12.
The Australia tour of West Indies 2025 will also witness a five-match T20I series later. Interestingly, CWI conducted a selection process to appoint the new test captain and vice-captain for the test side. Six players, namely John Campbell, Tevin Imlach, Joshua Da Silva, Justin Greaves, Roston Chase, and Jomel Warrican were part of the selection process.
Roston Chase selected as new test captain of West Indies; Jomel Warrican picked as vice-captain
After the data-driven selection process, all-rounder Roston Chase has been picked as the test captain of West Indies. Jomel Warrican has been picked as the vice-captain. ODI and T20I skipper Shai Hope opted out of the selection process as he wants to focus on the leadership of the shorter formats. Head Coach Daren Sammy urged the fans to support the new skipper.
“I fully endorse this appointment. Our new captain has earned the respect of his peers, understands the responsibility that comes with the role, and has shown the leadership qualities we need to take this team forward. I urge fans across the region to rally behind him—we’re building something special,” he said.
All-rounder Chase has experience of 49 tests so far. He has mustered 2265 runs across 90 innings with 5 centuries and 11 fifties. He has also scalped 85 wickets in 72 innings.
Warrican is a left-arm spinner. He made his test debut in October 2022 and has played a total of 19 tests so far. He has captured 73 wickets in 34 innings at an average of 27.64. He also accounts for two five-wicket hauls and one 10-wicket haul in the longest format.
