What is the curse of Ahmedabad pitch & will it cost India in T20 World Cup 2026 final?

India have a poor record in Ahmedabad before the T20 World Cup 2026 final.
The Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad is set to host yet another big final on Sunday, March 8, where India will face New Zealand to defend their T20 World Cup title.
Ever since the stadium was built, it has been given priority by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for high-profile matches, mainly due to the large number of seats available.
With a total capacity of 132,000, it is the largest cricket stadium in the world. It has already hosted many big games, such as the 2022, 2023, and 2025 Indian Premier League finals, as well as the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup.
However, fans of the Indian cricket team have expressed concerns about the stadium, as they believe it brings bad luck for the team and historically has not suited India in big matches. They are worried about the T20 World Cup final, as India will once again be playing at the Narendra Modi Stadium.
On that note, let’s understand the so-called curse of the Ahmedabad pitch for the Indian Cricket Team and how it could cost them the T20 World Cup title.
Ahmedabad’s pitch curse for the Indian cricket team-
Earlier, the BCCI used to prefer historically rich stadiums like Wankhede and Eden Gardens for high-profile matches whenever it got the rights to host an ICC event.
However, ever since the Narendra Modi Stadium was built, the organisation has changed its priorities to Ahmedabad for hosting high-profile games, especially finals, mainly because of its seating capacity.
The Indian cricket team played against Australia here in the final of the 2023 Cricket World Cup. They were undefeated in the tournament until the final and wanted to end their campaign on a high note by winning the title. However, they were struck back by the Kangaroos in the final.
The pitch was generally slower than in the early part of the tournament. The Indian team didn’t expect it, and after being asked to bat first, they could only manage 240 runs.
Defending the total, India shocked Australia by taking quick wickets in the early overs, but the dew made the chase easier for Australia. Ultimately, they took away the World Cup trophy from the Indian team, a pain the Indian fans have yet to overcome.
The most recent ICC match India played at this stadium was the T20 World Cup 2026 Super 8 clash against South Africa. The Indian team conceded 187 runs to the Proteas in 20 overs and failed to chase the target, getting all out for just 111 runs and handing the visitors an easy 76-run victory. This forced the team to play their next two games as virtual knockout matches.
India’s batting has not suited the Ahmedabad pitch much in World Cups, and even though it is the home ground of the Indian team, the fans remain very concerned about the final, where they will take on New Zealand.
The Indian team has not registered a single victory against the Kiwis in the T20 World Cup so far, and to defend their T20 World Cup trophy, they will have to overcome the challenge of the Ahmedabad pitch.
