India have lost 18 straight tosses in ODI cricket, extending their unwanted world record.

In ODI cricket, Indian Cricket Team have struggled with the toss to an almost unfathomable degree. India suffered their 18th straight ODI toss loss in the ongoing third match of the series against Australian Cricket Team at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney.

Although it hasn’t always dictated India’s results, the toss can influence the game’s atmosphere. For instance, India had to bat first after losing the toss in Adelaide, which imposed pressure on a strong Indian batting attack as conditions favoured bowlers a lot.

Most consecutive ODI tosses lost by a team

  • 18 – India (2023–2025)
  • 11 – Netherlands (2011–2013)
  • 9 – England (2023)
  • 9 – USA (2022)
  • 9 – England (2017)
  • 9 – West Indies (2011–2012)
  • 9 – Australia (1998–1999)

The last time India won a toss in an ODI match was in ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 semi-final. Shubman Gill, KL Rahul, and Rohit Sharma haven’t called the toss correctly since. The new captain, Gill, has really lost ten of his eleven tosses.

It is absurd that India’s streak has lasted this long, even though there is no science to calling the toss properly. Simply explained, there is a 50/50 probability of winning a toss. The likelihood of India tossing coins for 18 straight is extremely low—just 0.000763 percent.

Since the start of their toss record, India’s results have been inconsistent. India lost against Australia in the final of ICC Cricket World Cup 2023. But, earlier this year, the Men in Blue also won ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and went undefeated. In South Africa, their second-string ODI team also won the series.
