England and India have faced each other in seven tests at Headingley, Leeds in the past.
The India Cricket Team and the England Cricket Team are locking horns in the first test of the five-match series at Headingley, Leeds. The encounter has turned out to be a high-scoring one with both teams smacking 450-plus totals in the first innings.
England skipper Ben Stokes won the toss and opted to field first in the match. The visitors piled up a mammoth total of 471/10 in the first innings, with centuries by Yashasvi Jaiswal (101), Shubman Gill (147), and Rishabh Pant (134). However, the hosts came up with an equally incredible show with the bat.
England responded with 465/10 with a century by Ollie Pope (106) and a brilliant 99-run knock by Harry Brook. Ben Duckett (62), Jamie Smith (40), and Chris Woakes (38) also made crucial contributions with the bat. India earned just a six-run lead at the end of the first innings, and with the way things panned out on the first three days, the match can go either way in the last two days.

Both teams have faced each other in seven tests at Headingley, Leeds in the past, out of which India won two games and lost four matches. One match ended in a draw.
During their last tour in England in 2021-22, India lost their encounter at Headingley by a huge margin of an innings and 76 runs. Moreover, their last victory in Leeds arrived 23 years ago in 2002.
India’s last test win at Headingley, Leeds came in 2002 when Sourav Ganguly-led India faced England in the third test of England tour at the venue. The Indian team outplayed the hosts by a huge margin of an innings and 46 runs.
Electing to bat first in the encounter, India posted a gigantic total of 628/8 (d) in the first innings with centuries by Rahul Dravid (148), Sachin Tendulkar (193), and Sourav Ganguly (128) and a fifty by Sanjay Bangar (68).
Later, they bowled out the hosts for 273 in the first innings and enforced the follow-on. With a century by Nasser Hossain (110), England managed to post 309 in the second innings; however, it was not enough to make a comeback in the match. Dravid was adjudged the Player of the Match for his century. Later, the four-match series ended in a 1-1 draw.
