Australia have been eliminated from the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
Australia suffered their biggest setback at the start of the T20 World Cup 2026 when they failed to qualify for the Super 8 round. Mitchell Marsh & Co. are placed in Group B in the 20-team tournament along with four other teams.
In Marsh’s absence, Australia won against Ireland in the opening game. However, they faced a shocking defeat against Zimbabwe in the next encounter, losing by 23 runs. Marsh returned for the third match, but the Kangaroos failed to outplay Sri Lanka and suffered a big defeat.
While they still had a narrow chance to qualify for the next round, they were taken aback when the Ireland vs Zimbabwe clash was completely washed out due to rain on February 17. With the abandoned clash, Zimbabwe became the second team after Sri Lanka to secure a place in the Super 8 from Group B.
Australia last faced a first-round exit in the T20 World Cup 2009

Notably, the Kangaroos have been part of the T20 World Cup since the inaugural edition in 2007 and have featured in all 10 editions. They won the tournament once in the 2021 edition by crushing New Zealand in the final.
Interestingly, this is only the second time that Australia have suffered a first-round exit in T20 World Cup history. They were last ousted after the group stage 17 years ago in the 2009 edition.
Australia, led by Ricky Ponting, were placed in Group C in the tournament with Sri Lanka and the West Indies. They lost to both teams and finished last (3rd) in the points table with 0 points. Sri Lanka and the West Indies qualified for the Super 8 round from their pool in the tournament.
Meanwhile, the Kangaroos have one more game left against Oman in the T20 World Cup 2026. It will be a dead-rubber game, but it will allow the Mitchell Marsh-led side a chance to finish in the third spot in the points table. They are currently placed fourth with two points from three matches, having won one match and lost two.
