Spencer Johnson has replaced Nathan Ellis in the CSK squad for IPL 2026.
Chennai Super Kings (CSK) suffered a big blow ahead of the Indian Premier League 2026 as their star pacer Nathan Ellis was ruled out of the tournament due to an injury. The Australian pacer suffered a severe hamstring injury earlier this month and will need two to three months for rehabilitation.
Now, CSK have signed another Australian pacer, Spencer Johnson, as a replacement for Ellis for INR 1.50 crore. However, the left-arm pacer will not join their squad immediately and will miss the initial few weeks.
Johnson will need a clearance from Cricket Australia (CA) to participate in IPL 2026. He has been suffering from back issues for the last two years. He last represented Australia in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 in February.

Notably, Johnson will miss about three weeks of action in IPL 2026. He is expected to join the Super Kings’ squad between April 21 and 23.
He is not new to IPL as he also featured in the last two editions. The left-arm pacer made his debut in the IPL 2024 edition for the Gujarat Titans (GT), where he bagged an expensive contract of INR 10 crore in the auction. He also gave a decent performance by picking four wickets in five games.
He was signed by the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in IPL 2025. He took only one wicket in four matches. Following his poor show, he was released by KKR ahead of the IPL 2026 mini-auction.
He remained unsold in the auction with a base price of INR 1.50 crore. Last month, he was picked by Quetta Gladiators in PSL 2026 as a direct signing. However, he opted out of the tournament for personal reasons and has now joined the IPL.
Johnson has played nine IPL games across two seasons, clinching five wickets at an average of 56.80 and an economy of 10.39. He has played 5 ODIs and 8 T20Is for Australia so far, taking 4 and 14 wickets, respectively.
