There are chances that IND vs SL might be one of the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
India and Sri Lanka have both showcased strong form in the group stage of the T20 World Cup 2026, with the backing of local crowds giving them the extra edge to deliver their best performances.
India, the defending champions, dominated Group A with an unbeaten record, winning all their matches convincingly. Their highlight was a commanding 61-run thrashing of Pakistan in Colombo, where Ishan Kishan’s aggressive batting and a clinical bowling display secured top spot with an excellent net run rate.
Sri Lanka, co-hosts and Group B toppers, also performed impressively. They started strongly by defeating Oman and Ireland, before knocking out Australia, thanks to Pathum Nissanka’s fabulous century. Despite two massive injury blows to key bowlers Wanindu Hasaranga and Matheesha Pathirana, the Lankans are yet to lose a match in the competition so far.
Where will the India vs Sri Lanka clash take place if both meet?
After their group-stage matches, both teams now sit in separate Super 8 groups. India are in Group 1 with South Africa, West Indies, and Zimbabwe, while Sri Lanka headline Group 2 alongside Pakistan, England, and New Zealand.
An India vs Sri Lanka clash in the semi-finals remains possible but depends on specific outcomes. The knockout format pairs the Group 1 winner against the Group 2 runner-up (or vice versa) for the semis on March 4 and 5.
If India top Group 1 and Sri Lanka finish second in Group 2, or vice-versa, they would meet in one of the semi-finals. Should they meet in the semi-finals, the match will take place in India. The provision for a semi-final encounter to take place in Sri Lanka is solely created for Pakistan, due to geopolitical reasons.
Should Sri Lanka qualify for the semi-finals or finals, they will play their match in India. Semi-final 1 will be held on March 4 at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, while semi-final 2 is at Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on March 5.
Only if Pakistan qualify for the knockout stage, their matches will be played in Colombo at R. Premadasa Stadium.
